Imperata cylindrica 'Red Baron', syn. 'rubra', in Dutch called Japanese blood grass, is a decorative deciduous grass species with a stiff growth and loose clump-forming habit. The narrowly linear leaves are fresh green and then turn fiery red in summer. Flowering rarely occurs in Europe. In other regions, Japanese bloodgrass blooms from July to August with silver-gray flower spikes. Imperata cylindrica 'Red Baron' likes a sunny and sheltered location in well-drained soil. This grass is drought-tolerant, reasonably hardy, tolerates sea breezes and air pollution and is a special accent plant for use in the border.
